Introducing: The Humans in Healthcare Community

come build it with me!

📣 Introducing: the of the Humans in Healthcare Community

In case you missed it, I announced the early launch of the next chapter of Humans in Healthcare — a (lightly) paid and highly curated membership community. This first iteration is specifically for clinicians in transition (work, career stage, life), clinician creators, and clinicians needing peer connection and a place of empowerment.

Building this space has been in my heart for more than 2 years and I’ve been doing it disparately over the course of that time. This year, I decided it was time to stop wavering and just launch it, already. There are many reasons why I’m building this space, but here are a few.

Clinicians in Transitions

My clinical experience was fraught with anxiety and insecurity. I didn’t have a place to work through challenges specific to clinicians, process professional grief, or connect to others who desired something different.

Later, I navigated my journey out of direct clinical care alone. The most lonely part came after I got my first non-clinical job. Because I was the only one of my colleagues to transition, I did not have a peer group or space to help normalize the transition.

What I’ve learned through my journey is that these feelings are common in times of transition, whether that be to a nonclinical role, rising as a leader, or trying to figure out what comes next. The endless search for answers can come up empty because often, they are inside you and all it takes is being in a space with people who get it — a community of people in the same season, a few steps ahead of you, or a few behind you. You can learn from people who have gone before in building their career or portfolio in and outside of the clinic, understand their pitfalls, and what a day in the life is like. You can get validation on your experiences. And think about the network effects as we open our networks to each other. That’s why communities can be transformative.

For Clinicians in Transition: this will be a space to find peer support, connection, learning, and teaching as we navigate this nonlinear or linear career and life.

Clinician Creators

Additionally, many of us clinicians who have navigated this process are now stepping into the creative realm to help other clinicians learn through things like course or content creation, company building, or elevating our clinical voice, yet there is no clinical decision support tool for creating as a clinician (think UpToDate: Creators 😅 ). Imagine if you had a built-in user base who could give you early feedback so you could build, test, and iterate on your creative endeavors.

Similarly, we usually need to have a brand or audience on social media to drive traffic to what we’ve built, but social media can trap us in the endless comparison of someone else’s highlight reel. This can be paralyzing, discouraging, and counterproductive. Many times, we’re subject to the algorithm and our creations remain unseen.

Or, perhaps you’ve shown up to social media and have been overwhelmed by all of the course and coaching options available to you. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a centralized place to find the best option for you based on your specific needs?

And what if we don’t want to create alone? What if we want to find like-minded collaborators to build together? What if we had a group of supportive peers cheering us on and amplifying us from their platforms too? Imagine if we all did that for each other — a beautiful way for all of us to be collaborative with each other while celebrating our own creations too.

For Clinician Creators, think of this as a launch pad to your creative life in a place that is collaborative, not competitive.

Clinician Empowerment

Clinicians experience a range of occupational experiences: from professional grief to growing in leadership without a how-to guide, to dealing with burnout and beyond. Additionally, clinicians have felt increasing dehumanization and disempowerment from the system of healthcare for too long. Often, these spaces are navigated alone, in the dark. Where can we come to support each other in these spaces and shine the light for each other? In community.

I saw the start of this during my time building a community for health tech founders, operators, and investors and before it was sunset in 2022 due to significant company downsizing, I had wanted to amplify the diverse voice of the clinician and invite more of them to the table of discussion. It’s not lost on me that we need more clinicians engaging with tech companies so they can understand true pain points before they build solutions. We need more diverse clinicians in leadership and at the table of change. This starts with listening to not just a title, but people like you and me, the diverse clinician in the room. And it also starts with us sharing our knowledge with them. I would love to grow this voice collaboratively from within the community.

The clinician's voice is strong, but imagine how strong it can be together.

For Clinician Empowerment, think of this as a place to grow our voices together and be the change we want to see

Putting it all together: community

I don’t hold all the answers, but I can create a space for us to ask questions, find support in transition, experience the transformative power of community-driven learning, build, test, iterate, and amplify each other’s creative work, and find extra special connections you may never have made otherwise. It’s a skill to curate a community and that’s why it is lightly paid — and, my special sauce is that I consider you in my care and will do what I can to help you.

And the best part is I’m not doing it alone. Some incredible people who have been integral to my journey are joining me as founding members of this community (and a few more to come!). They will be active and present in the community, contributing their unique knowledge and experience and learning from you too. Each of them represents an element that I’m infusing into the community: transitions, creators, empowerment

Ok, so I’ve talked about who the membership is for. So who isn’t it for?

  • Folks who prefer transactional spaces and only want to solicit services

  • Need a very specific job search

  • Would rather focus on differences than similarities

  • Don’t value community-driven learning

What makes this community different than the many others that exist?

Many other communities exist and may be a better fit for you. Here are a few unique points about Humans in Healthcare:

  • Human first: In a world of AI, I am doubling down on humanity. Built by humans for humans. Come as a person, not a title

  • Clinician founded and led with a unique clinician generalist flair

  • No gatekeeping to clinical credentials: I value and want a diverse clinician voice in this community so all clinicians are welcome

  • We’re in this together — you will be integral in building this with me vs me building it for you

  • No direct solicitation, ads, or trolls: social media has its place in the community for sure, but we can’t always have the raw and vulnerable conversations we need to have on a public platform. This is a safer and more intimate space to talk about the challenges

  • Grows with you: as the community grows, there will be offerings for specific stages in your career/life journey

  • It’s not just about tech: we’ll have lots of discussion and resources for clinicians in tech, but it’s not solely centered around it

  • Why and how: there will be a focus on getting to your why so you can be successful in your how. I don’t hold all the answers, but I can create the space for questions so you can find your answers

  • My special sauce: When you join, I consider you in my care and will do what I can to support you
